For Newcastle, it was another away disappointment. Although they piled on the pressure in a one-sided second half, United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was rarely called into action as they suffered their fifth defeat in nine away league matches this season.
Dorgu, playing in an unusual position on the right, scored the winner after 24 minutes, with a superb volley after the visitors failed to clear a corner.
United start brightly
Ruben Amorim’s men should have got off to a good start, Casemiro finding a yard of space in the box after three minutes, but he could only head Mason Mount’s shot over the bar.
Benjamin Sesko and Jacob Murphy had chances at either end while Lammens saved well from Bruno Guimaraes, before Matheus Cunha’s run and shot was palmed away for a corner by Aaron Ramsdale.
Mount’s cross from the left was headed high and Dorgu raced in from the right to meet the falling ball at full tilt and volley past Ramsdale’s outstretched right hand for his first goal in a United shirt.
Dorgu excelled at the other end of the pitch early in the second half, diving bravely to block Fabian Schar’s on-target shot away from danger.
United were content to sit back and play on the counter and that tactic almost paid off on the hour mark when the previously quiet Sesko broke away and fired a left-footed shot against the top of the bar.
The woodwork was rattled at the other end a few minutes later, the impressive Lewis Hall collecting a loose ball in midfield, running 20 yards and cutting a shot which beat Lammens but came back under the bar.
Wasteful Newcastle can’t beat Lammens
Newcastle were firmly in the lead but lacked quality in the final third. Anthony Gordon should have done better than shoot wide when he was well placed after 67 minutes.
Diogo Dalot shot at the other end before Joelinton and Gordon squandered good opportunities for Newcastle. The visitors’ final chance fell to Lewis Miley, but the young full-back fired over as United held on.
