There’s not much difference between the action and sci-fi movie genres anymore, especially when one of the best action movies of the year had a sci-fi story about sentient AI.
Remember the last time there was a true sci-fi hit that wasn’t also an action movie?
To save time with these end-of-year lists, Watch with us combined these categories and chose our picks for the five best action and sci-fi films of 2025.
If you hurry, you might even have time to find our third choice in theaters before its release at the end of the week.
5. “Novocaine” (2025)
The boys ends in 2026, but Jack Quad seems to have a future as a movie star thanks to his roles Novocaine and his other film on this list. The film’s title is also the nickname for Quaid’s character, Nathan Caine, a man physically incapable of feeling pain. However, we must clarify that Nathan’s body can be injured; he just doesn’t feel it.
After living a sheltered life as a bank manager, Nathan finally meets a woman, Sherry Margrave (Amber Middle Dogs), who seems to understand it. When bank robbers take Sherry hostage, Nathan takes it upon himself to save her. Along the way, his body accumulates horrible injuries, which give a bit of dark humor to this action comedy. But that’s never enough to slow him down for long.

4. “Predator: Badlands” (2025)
There were two great Predator films this year, both from the director Then Trachtenberg. The animated anthology Predator: killer of killers would have made this list if Predator: Badlands had not been released a few months later. Trachtenberg did something none of the other Predator films had done before by shifting the focus of the story to one of the Predators.
Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, a predator exiled from his own people. After being abandoned on a small planet, Dek realizes that he can reclaim his lost honor by killing this world’s apex predator. To do this, Dek joins forces with Thia (Elle Fanning)a humanoid android Stranger Weyland-Yutani Franchise Corporation. To get out of this, Del and Thea need each other, but that doesn’t mean they’re always on the same page.
Predator: Badlands is in the cinema.
3. “Ballerina” (2025)
Although John Wick: Chapter 5 was announced as a project in development alongside a Donny Yen– directed spin-off, Ballerina It was all we could have for a while. After his striking appearance in No time to die, Ana de Armas demonstrated her action skills as Eve Macarro, a young woman who grew up in the Ruska Roma assassin clan that once hosted John Wick (Keanu Reeves) in their ranks.
Reeves has extensive appearances in this film, as do familiar faces Winston (Ian McShane) and Charon (Lance Reddick). But it’s largely the story of Eve looking for a way to get revenge on the cult that murdered her father. Eve is not only ready to eliminate anyone who gets in her way, she will even burn her own clan to ashes. The action choreography doesn’t reach the same heights as the John Wick films, but it was still much better than most films.

2. “Companion” (2025)
The character of Jack Quaid in Companion would probably wish he didn’t feel any pain, especially once he alienates his girlfriend, Iris (Sophie Thatcher). She was incredibly devoted to Josh (Quaid) and only wanted to be happy with him… because that’s how she was programmed to behave. Iris thought she was living a fairytale romance until a horrible vacation revealed her true nature.
It’s a breakup that Iris is not going to accept. She may not have been designed for violence, but Iris quickly becomes adept at it. Once Iris starts thinking for herself, she becomes Josh’s worst nightmare.

1. “Mission: Impossible – Final Judgment” (2025)
If it’s the final Mission: Impossible film for Tom Cruisethen him and the writer/director Christophe McQuarrie went out on a high note. Each of the latest films in this series has ratcheted up the stakes and the action, and it would be difficult to go much further than Mission: Impossible – The Final Judgment.
Although Hulu has traditionally been an action haven for fans of the genre, the streamer hasn’t added many new movies in this category this month, unless you really like the Planet of the Apes movies. This film directly continues the storyline of the previous film, Mission: Impossible – Dead reckoningas Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his IMF team move heaven and earth to protect the world from the Entity, an AI being that could destroy everything humanity has built. Ex-thief Grace (Hayley Atwell) and Ethan’s old enemy, Paris (Pom Klementieff), join his team of IMF thugs alongside another newcomer, Théo Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis). Ethan will need all the help he can get as Cruise undertakes even crazier stunts that look fantastic on camera.
