Travid’s head has backed Jake Weatherald to meet the challenges of international cricket. Head believes his opening partner has demonstrated his potential to remain in the long-term Ashes Series so far.
Weatherland’s performances for Australia A and Tasmania over 18 months saw him selected in Australia Perth Test Squad. However, his first series had some good starts that he couldn’t convert.
He managed only 146 runs in 8 innings. With just one score of 50+, he has averaged 20.85 so far in the first four Tests. He looked comfortable early in his innings but struggled to convert them into big scores.
Head, who batted with him in seven of his eight innings, said Weatherald had the match for Test cricket despite modest returns in difficult conditions.
“I think he’s a good enough cricketer for international cricket,” Head said on Sunday. “I think he’s shown a lot of glimpses in his first four Tests, and it’s not always going to go the way you want it to. I think there are a lot of guys who have looked up to it with the bat and are some of the best of our generation. So it can be a tough way to start your international career. But look, I think he’s a good enough player to play international cricket.”
Weatherald had some odd dismissals, including heavy-weight decisions, short-ball errors and some fine deliveries. Despite the setbacks, Head believes Weatherald has looked good at times and was particularly impressed with his 72 in Brisbane, which showed his Test potential.
“I felt like he placed the ball really well,” Head said. “The runs haven’t been there in the last two Tests but he played a crucial innings for us in Brisbane. So over the course of a series, looking for moments in time that could win you a series and he was able to do that in Brisbane.”
