Nasdaq-listed Vietnamese automaker VinFast overtook South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia to become India’s fourth-largest electric vehicle maker in December, albeit with lower volumes.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles continues to be the best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer in India with 5,231 registrations as of December 2025, according to VAHAN data as of December 29, 2025. Tata has six electric models in its portfolio.
SAIC-backed JSW MG Motor India, which sells three electric vehicle models, ranked second with 3,054 registrations. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) sold around 2,600 electric vehicles in December.
VinFast, a new entrant in India’s electric vehicle race, recorded registrations of 321 units in December. In comparison, Hyundai Motor India, which sells the Creta EV, recorded 238 units. Kia India, which launched the Carens Clavis EV earlier this year, recorded registrations of 272 units.
VinFast forayed into the Indian market in 2025 by launching two electric sports utility vehicles (SUVs), the VF6 and VF7. These electric vehicles are assembled at the Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu. The automaker has embarked on a store expansion drive across the country, with 35 showrooms within four months of its launch.
Elon Musk’s Tesla has also hurt premium and luxury automakers’ electric vehicle sales. Tesla sold 62 electric vehicles in December, according to VAHAN. Chinese automaker BYD recorded 212 registrations in December, compared to 300 units in the same month last year. German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz India recorded electric vehicle registrations of just 53 units in December, almost half compared to 103 units in the corresponding month last year. However, BMW doubled its electric vehicle registrations to 300 units in December.
For calendar year 2025, Tata Motors recorded 68,558 electric vehicle registrations, up 12% from the previous year.
JSW MG Motor India more than doubled its electric vehicle volumes from 21,802 units in 2024 to 50,853 units in 2025 thanks to the Windsor EV, which became the best-selling electric car in 2025. M&M’s electric vehicle volumes more than quadrupled from 7,135 in 2024 to 33,008 units in 2025.
