A new Space balls movie is in preparation at Amazon MGM Studios. Mel Brooks announced that it is returning to the sequel to the 1987 parody film with a cast full of all-star actors eager to bring the colorful characters back to life.
Brooks directed, co-wrote and produced the first Space balls film, which also starred Jean Bonbon, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner And Joan Rivers.
News of the sequel was first announced in June 2024, with Brooks signing on as producer. A year later, it was revealed that the cinema icon would reprise his role as Yogurt, a parody of the film Star Wars character Yoda.
Pullman and Moranis will also be back for the sequel – with a few new faces joining them for this wild adventure.

Josh Gad will produce and star in ‘Spaceballs 2’
Josh Gad is about to star in Space balls 2 alongside Brooks. A few months after the project’s development was announced, Gad said he had completed the script.
“Without MGM taking me to their cells at Culver Prison, I can tell you the draft is over,” he said. Forbes in November 2024. “Everyone who read it was blown away. The process of working on this subject with and alongside Mel Brooks was one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad described the opportunity as a “fever dream” and said Brooks was “incredibly supportive and engaged and electrified by it because he was the one that surprisingly got away with it.”
“It’s a dream to finally be able to bring to reality the reality that Yogurt prophesied in the first film,” Gad continued. “I can’t say more. I can’t tell you anything beyond [the] process at this point, but I can tell you that every hour of every day is currently dedicated to making this project closer and closer to reality – and I think we’re getting close to the end zone here.

In addition to Gad and Brooks, Kéké Palmer has joined the cast, but details about her role as Destiny are largely being kept under wraps. Pullman and Moranis will reprise their roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively.
Bill’s youngest son, Lewis Pullmanalso joined the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He will play a character named Starburst, the son of Queen Vespa and Lone Starr.
A photo of the first table read in September 2025 showed Moranis, Brooks, Palmer, Pullman, Zuniga, Wyner and Anthony Carrigan as part of the casting. Gad and director Josh Greenbaum were also in the picture.
The black and white photo showed the group chatting among themselves while sitting around a table containing a laptop with someone on a video call. Fans of the film immediately understood that the image was a recreation of the table read for Star Wars: The Force Awakensrespecting Space balls‘ parody of the iconic franchise.
A trailer for “Spaceballs 2” has been released
Brooks shared a teaser for Space balls 2 on X, which presented a Star Wars-style black background with blue letters, June 12, 2025. The text displayed on the screen described how many Star Wars films and television shows have been produced in recent decades, as well as multiple Jurassic Park films, Marvel movies and shows and expansion of other major franchises.
At the end of the trailer, Brooks appeared in a Space balls sweatshirt, saying: “After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie.
A clip of the character Dark Helmet appeared on screen with the words “May the Schwartz be with you.”

When will “Spaceballs 2” hit theaters?
No official release date has been announced, but the film’s first trailer released in June 2025 confirmed that it would be released in 2027. “The Schwartz wakes up in 2027,” the video teases.
What did Bill Pullman say about ‘Spaceballs 2’?
Bill told exclusively Us every week in December 2025, he watched his son Lewis “with great joy” during filming Space balls 2 together.
“We just finished [with] three months in Australia, to shoot a film, Space ballsthe sequel and he plays my son,” Bill teased while supporting Lewis at his film’s premiere. Ann Lee’s will.
