Chelsea have now identified an “incredible” manager as their top target to replace Enzo Marescaafter splitting from the Italian on New Year’s Day.
After Maresca’s departure, BlueCo does not intend to waste time in appointing a new manager, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romanowho said: “Chelsea will appoint a new manager very soon, it won’t take weeks or a lot of time. The club is currently working on it.
“Liam Rosenior, highly appreciated internally after excellent work in Strasbourg, is one of the contenders.
“The decision will be made in a few days and will not take long.”
The Blues have a busy month ahead, with eight more matches scheduled before the end of January, starting with a tough trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on Sunday.
As such, they could appoint a new manager quickly, and Rosenior could be an interesting option, given the work the Englishman has done at Strasbourg, leading the French side to the Europa Conference League last season.
However, the 41-year-old is not the first choice option, according to a Spanish report which states Chelsea have now identified Gareth Southgate as their main target to replace Marescawith the search for a new manager already underway.
The former England manager is the leading candidate for the role, with the board particularly impressed by his work with the Three Lions, during which he demonstrated an ability to handle media pressure.
Not only that, but Southgate’s ability to develop young players is also appreciated, with the 55-year-old clearly ticking many boxes for BlueCo.
The Englishman has received praise for the work he has done with the Three Lions, with the Lionesses manager Sarah Wiegman adage: “What he has done for English football is really incredible. Of course they reached the final again, they also reached the final of the last Euro. I think he can be very, very proud of himself. I think England is very proud of him and me as a Dutchman I am very proud of him too.”
Indeed, Southgate led England to two European Championship finals, but they ultimately failed to cross the finish line, despite having home advantage against Italy in 2021.
Additionally, the former Middlesbrough boss’s experience at club level is limited, having not managed any team other than England since leaving the Riverside Stadium in 2009.
Having suffered relegation with Boro, the former England manager would be a risky appointment for Chelsea, and they could probably do a lot better, given Champions League football is on offer at Stamford Bridge.
