Mike Tyson is one of the most fearsome knockout artists of all time, but when asked about the best puncher he faced during his professional career, “Iron Mike” provided a definitive answer.
Tyson has shared the ring with a number of legendary fighters but he is best known for his captivating rise to and retention of the world heavyweight title, which we won at the record age of 20 and defended nine times.
A famous defeat to Buster Douglas ended that reign, but Tyson got his hands on world honors for a second time by stopping Frank Bruno six years later, only for Evander Holyfield to step in and dethrone Tyson once again.
During his Ring Magazine “Best I Faced,” “Iron” Mike named Holyfield as the best and greatest opponent of his career, despite “The Real Deal” initially campaigning as a cruiserweight and Tyson suffering bruising stoppages from the likes of Lennox Lewis and Douglas.
“Holyfield [was the biggest puncher]: He threw some great shots with both hands and with bad intentions.
Tyson and Holyfield faced each other again in 1997, where Tyson was disqualified for biting his rival’s ear in one of the most infamous moments in boxing history.
The Alabama-born champion went on to defend two more heavyweight titles, including a unification with IBF champion Michael Moorer, until a draw and eventual loss to Lennox Lewis cost him his belts. Ultimately, Holyfield hung up his gloves with 29 knockouts in 44 victories.
