Birmingham City have given fans a first glimpse of what their St. Andrew’s replacement could look like, unveiling concept images of a state-of-the-art stadium set to open by the 2029/30 season.
The Championship side, whose spiritual home has been around since 1906, are planning a ground that could cost up to £3 billion.
The proposed design would increase capacity from 29,409 to 62,000, making it the eighth largest stadium in England – slightly larger than Anfield (61,276) and just 850 seats behind Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Images released by the club show a futuristic ‘spaceship’ inspired exterior in the club’s iconic blue, with the word ‘BLUES’ featured prominently around the packaging. Supporters can also expect generous green spaces around the stadium and rooftop areas designed for pre-match relaxation.
Nick Smith, head of infrastructure for the City of Birmingham, proposed a update on potential designsadding that the stadium will also be equipped to host large-scale non-football events.
He stressed, however, that the final design remained “subject to change”.
While the visuals are impressive, Birmingham’s focus remains on the pitch first – they’ll need to be back in time to fill the stands when this futuristic new home finally opens. Otherwise, all the rooftop bars and green spaces in the world won’t stop those seats from feeling a little empty.
