South Africa faces Cameroon on Sunday in the African Cup of Nations.
South Africa faces Cameroon in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Two of the biggest names in African football face off for a place in the quarter-finals in what is their first meeting in a competition in almost a decade.
Bafana Bafana, the 1996 AFCON champions and third last time out, advanced to the last 16 as runners-up from Group B, beating Angola 2-1 in their first match before a 1-0 defeat to 10-man Egypt was followed by a dramatic 3-2 victory over neighboring Zimbabwe.
Hugo Broos, the South Africa coach who led Cameroon to their last CAN triumph in Gabon in 2017, is well aware of what his team will face.
“We have to learn to concentrate,” Broos said after the victory against Zimbabwe.
“We can’t play like that against them [Cameroon]. If we do that, we have no chance of winning.
Only Egypt has more CAN titles than Cameroon. The five-time champions finished second behind holders Ivory Coast in Group F thanks to just one fewer goal, with an identical points total and goal difference.
Cameroon, hoping to go far to somehow ease the pain of their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, opened their campaign with a 1-0 draw against Gabon before drawing 1-1 against Ivory Coast and fighting back to defeat surprise package Mozambique 2-1.
But head coach David Pagou insisted “it will be a very complicated match”.
Broos has confirmed that Sphephelo Sithole’s omission against Zimbabwe was a tactical decision rather than an injury-related decision.
Sipho Mbule returned in this match as Broos opted for a more attacking formation led by Burnley’s Lyle Foster.
Bryan Mbeumo is yet to find the net in this year’s tournament, but the Manchester United striker will still be the key to Cameroon’s success.
He and Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba were taken off at half-time against Mozambique, but it is believed this was to avoid suspension for the knockout stage.
Defender and captain Nouhou Tolo remains a concern after being forced off the field with a hamstring injury and replaced by Christopher Wooh.
South Africa: Williams; Mudau, Modiba, Mbokazi, Ngezana; Mokoena, Aubas, Mbule; Mofokeng, Appliss, Foster
Cameroon: Epassy; Tolo, Kotto, Malone; Yongwa, Baleba, Namaso, Tchamadeu, Ebong; Mbeumo, Kofane
