This year strongly suggests the end of the broadcast network era for late-night comedy shows. CBS made the bold decision to declare that it was only giving “The Late Show with Stéphane Colbert“In Johnny Carson’s era, his show dominated the airspace. Today, “comedians” address left-wing audiences in what resembles group therapy.
President Donald TrumpThe re-election of Donald Trump clearly showed that the cascading mockery of the “Orange Man” did not prevent him from winning. But liberal pundits still equated comedians with democracy. On ABC’s “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin dramatically proclaimed that this decision to stop losing money on Colbert was not financial (as CBS claimed). “It’s the dismantling of our democracy. It’s the dismantling of our Constitution.” She shattered that old idea that liberals “speak truth to power.” But they never speak the truth to “power” when their favorites win. They didn’t “tell the truth” when former President Joe Biden was clearly in cognitive decline.
The most memorable moments of late night comedians in 2025 were irredeemably evil. Take Jon Stewart during his Monday-only gig on “The Daily Show,” mocking the free market in February. “Capitalism is by definition exploitative. That’s the way it works. That’s fine. But the role of government should then be to mitigate the negative effects of that exploitation on Americans, not to subsidize that betrayal with our money. We get [bleeped] to a Diddy party and they make us buy baby oil!”
It’s not as nasty as Stewart’s former minion John Oliver was on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” in March, bashing former President Ronald Reagan. “I admit there are positive things you can say about Reagan, like ‘He was our only president to make a movie with a chimpanzee’ or ‘He died.’ But his moral clarity might surprise every gay man who lived in the 1980s. I’m just saying, if you brought Reagan back from the dead and told him all the racist shit Trump managed to do in less than two months, he would cum so hard that he would die again.

Late-night guests knew how to echo their hosts. When Trump took over operations of the Kennedy Center, actor Nathan Lane launched into a speech on the Colbert show, mocking what Trump would present on stage. “Tomorrow night they have a youth choir made up entirely of Elon Musk’s children. Because ‘Hamilton’ canceled his engagement, they are producing Lee Greenwood’s all-rap musical tribute to Ronald Reagan starring Kanye West. It’s called “Trickle Down.” Next comes a new production of “The Sound of Music” told from the point of view of the Nazis. Trust me, trust me, you don’t want to hear the list of their favorite things. »
Even America itself has been criticized for re-electing Trump. British actor Alan Cumming performed a superiority dance in July on Jimmy Kimmelthe show. “America, how are you? No, really, how are you? I mean, how are you besides being a country that just reintroduced concentration camps, took away health care from 17 million people to give tax cuts to billionaires, and also funded an armed militia of masked men who commit heinous kidnappings and crimes against humanity on a daily basis? Other than all that, are you okay? I wouldn’t have thought so. ”
This might help people understand why these shows are dropping in the ratings. You have to belong to a special category of haters to end your day with these rants. Alex Christy of NewsBusters found that 92% of political jokes The late-night shows were about conservatives, compared to 82% in 2024. The guest list was even worse, almost unanimously from the left, 99% of the time: 196 liberals against only two conservatives. Jimmy Fallon’s conversation with Greg Gutfeld was notable for its rarity.

The worst late night moment of the year was obviously Jimmy Kimmel’s blatant lie about Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer. “We reached new lows this weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to get political points out of it.”
It was a new low, all right. It was a time for mourning, not for mockery and lies. Two groups affiliated with the station decided to refuse to air Kimmel’s show, so ABC shut it down…for four programs. Four reruns of “Family Feud.” But the elitist media has had a month of anger. CNN host Jake Tapper proclaimed on the Seth Meyers show: “I thought that was about the most direct government infringement on free speech that I’ve seen in my life.”

Kimmel ended the year receiving the “Alternative Christmas Message” on Britain’s Channel 4, where, along with guest Alan Cumming, Kimmel called America “a mess,” a crumbling democracy in a nation full of losers. “We’re not brilliant. We’re Americans. No one knows that better than you, we’re always a little behind, but will we get through this? Maybe. Give us about three years. Please.”
ABC extended Kimmel’s contract in just a year, because there’s only so much money a company wants to lose for someone’s fiercely obnoxious “free speech.” Kimmel could always follow Colbert out the door since he is not interested in broadcasting, only in narrow broadcasting.
