United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and other carriers began reinstating flights to Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean on Sunday morning after U.S. aviation authorities lifted temporary restrictions. airspace restrictions imposed following the American strikes against Venezuela.
The temporary restrictions were set to expire at midnight Eastern Time, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement. post onpaving the way for airlines to resume most scheduled services on Sunday.
“Airlines are informed and will promptly update their schedules,” Mr Duffy said.
Thousands of travelers at the end of the New Year’s holiday were affected after the Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday ordered commercial planes to avoid parts of the region, triggering hundreds of flight cancellations.
President Donald Trump said Saturday that the strikes resulted in capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
United Airlines said it would restart service starting with flights to San Juan and planned additional departures Sunday to accommodate disrupted passengers. Delta Airlines said it was resumption of service in the Caribbean and work to re-let affected customers as schedules normalize.
Border Airlines also confirmed to CNBC that it had resumed normal operations.
Other airlines affected by the temporary restrictions include American airlines, Southwest Airlines And JetBlue Airways.
Carriers waived change fees and fare differences for customers affected by the closures if they booked their flights later in the month. More than a dozen airports in the region were included in the waivers.
The brief closure highlighted how quickly military action can disrupt civilian air transport, forcing airlines to suspend operations well beyond the immediate conflict zone.
Major US airlines have not served Venezuela directly for years. American Airlines was the last major carrier to halt flights to the country in 2019 due to the unrest.
