Trae Young heads to Washington, called Atlanta ‘legend’ by teammate

Atlanta Falcons Forward Mouhamed Gueye hailed Trae Young as a “legend” after it emerged the four-time All-Star was close to being traded to the Wizards of Washington.

Young will move to the capital after seven years in Atlanta in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. It’s a move that benefits both franchises, giving the Hawks some financial breathing room — especially as they continue to pursue a deal for Dallas star Anthony Davis — while Washington gets the experienced head they need to help develop an exciting generation of young players.

The 27-year-old has $95 million remaining on his Atlanta contract that runs through the end of the 2026-27 season.

Snyder shy on Young talk

When asked about Young after the 117-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday nightcoach Quin Snyder was coy and said, “I know you all have questions for me that I’m not at liberty to talk about or answer at this time.”

Gueye was more open. He said, “It’s TY, it’s Trae Young. When I got here, he was one of the first guys to text me to welcome me to town and gave me a lot of advice. Obviously playing with Trae, as a big guy, is like a dream come true. I love him as a guy, I love him as a teammate. … An Atlanta legend.”

Young will leave Georgia as Atlanta’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made (1,295) and assists (4,837). He has struggled with injuries this season, however, playing in only 10 games, averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds.

He did not play against the Pelicans due to a right quad contusion that kept him out for six games.
