Dominik Szoboszlai says Liverpool were determined to show that they had the upper hand FA Cup seriously this season after beat Barnsley 4-1 in the third round at Anfield.
The Reds overcame an inspired Barnsley performance to finally get a full score with Szoboszlai finds the net with a superb goal to open the scoringbefore his bizarre error allowed the Tykes to get back into the game in the first half.
Jérémie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike also scored as Arne Slot’s men booked a draw against Brighton in the fourth round, which will also be played at home.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Szoboszlai said: “We wanted to show that we take the FA Cup seriously. We always take it seriously.
“We showed again today that we need the whole team.
“The new guys arrived, who didn’t play as much as the others, and they showed a lot of quality. We need everyone.”
It wasn’t all positive for Szoboszlai that evening, with the Hungarian’s strange heel error putting the ball on a plate for Adam Phillips to put Barnsley back in the game and make it 2-1 before half-time.
“Sorry again for the team,” he added.
“I made it difficult for us. It was an easy mistake, I would say. Football happens and we move on.”
The FA Cup is perhaps Liverpool’s best chance of winning a trophy this season, with the team currently well off the pace of the Premier League and Szoboszlai says that while the new team is still a work in progress, he is encouraged by what he has seen in recent weeks.
“I think we need a little more time to get to know each other better. Since the summer, I think we have evolved a lot.
“All the new guys have settled in well, I think. I’m happy for Florian and Hugo and for all the guys.”
Manager Slot praised the quality of Liverpool’s goals but insisted his side should have been much more comfortable going into the match.
He said: “I was happy with the goals we scored, they were nice goals but I think it was way too long and close a game because at 2-0 giving away a goal like that made things difficult until the last 5-10 minutes before the end.
“It was difficult going each other’s way, a bad moment, and it could have been 2-2. So good goals, but again, not enough chances due to all the ball possession.”
Slot also expressed his disappointment with Szoboszlai’s decision to back the ball which led to Barnsley’s goal, which opposition manager Conor Hourihane described as “disrespectful”.
“I don’t think you should do that in an FA Cup match, a championship match, a friendly match or a training session,” the Reds boss said.
“So it’s a weird choice, and I have my opinion on it too, but I’d rather keep it to myself and talk about it with Dom in private.”
