Terence Crawford announced his retirement from the sport of boxing earlier this month, hanging up his gloves following a victory over Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
“Bud” Crawford became a three-time undisputed world champion when he dethroned the Mexican icon, jumping two divisions to take on the challenge and largely cruising to a unanimous decision victory.
It wasn’t long before Canelo announced he was aiming for a rematch, and many felt it was one of the only big-money fights for Crawford, even despite the convincing nature of his victory.
To nip any rumors in the bud, the American announced via social media that he was leaving undefeated and in top form.He was widely praised for the decision, with support from André Ward and Roy Jones Jr.
Still, some, including promoter Eddie Hearn, have suggested the announcement may well be a bargaining chip for future fight negotiations.
During a recent live stream with Adin Ross, Crawford was asked if he had ever been contacted about a rematch.
“No. Never.”
When asked if this was something he would consider, he replied:
“It’s over. If there was a rematch clause in the contract, I would have to honor it, but it’s over.”
The move leaves Alvarez, who has vowed to keep fighting, in a tough spot. He may well be looking to win back his super middleweight belts, which now have to be spread out and fought among top contenders, but that route doesn’t feature any names on the scale of Crawford.
