Bashar al-Assad disappears from Syrian banknotes as country introduces new currency

More than a year after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, images of the former dictator persist throughout Syria, notably on the country’s bank notes. On December 30, the country’s current president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced the introduction of new banknotes, which will no longer bear the image of Assad or his father Hafez. For the country, it is an opportunity to turn the page on a long painful period but also to bring economic stability to a country weakened by 13 years of civil war.
